['neɪpɔːl], Sir (seit 1990) V. S. (Vidiadhar Surajprasad), trinidad. Schriftsteller indischer Abstammung, * Chaguanas (bei Port of Spain) 17. 8. 1932; schreibt in englischer Sprache; Studium in Trinidad und Oxford, lebt seit 1950 v. a. in England; beschäftigt sich in seinen Romanen, Erzählungen, Essays und Reiseberichten mit den Auswirkungen von Kolonialismus und kultureller Entfremdung auf die Dritte Welt, sieht diese Erfahrungen jedoch als exemplarisch für die Bindungs- und Orientierungslosigkeit des modernen Menschen (»A house for Mr. Biswas«, 1961; deutsch »Ein Haus für Mr. Biswas«; Roman). 2001 erhielt Naipaul den Nobelpreis für Literatur.
